2001 - 2004 Racing Rules of Sailing

Can a boat overtaking to windward alter course and force a leeward boat to stop luffing and sail a proper course? Yes it can under Rule 17.1, but how do the rules achieve this? Find out the full story in this detailed course with coloured illustrations and discussion of the rules and tactics.

The Australian Yachting Federation Training Schemes provide for those crew who wish to obtain a 'Racing' accreditation. TL 2 is for dinghies and TL 6 is for keel boats, both courses cover inshore and offshore racing.

Student should have their TL 4 Competent Crew or Inshore Certificates before embarking on this course. Although this is not essential, the course material is on the basis that you have at least attained that level of understanding of the sport.

The syllabus for the course is as follows:

  • Part 1 Racing Rules and Government Right of Way regulations
  • Part 2 Definitions, Race Documents and Signals
  • Part 3 Right of Way
  • Part 4 Mark rounding rules
  • Part 5 Sailing the Course and other actions
  • Part 6 Protests and Appeals and Review

Included in the text are a number of assessment papers that are to be completed and returned for marking. The assessment will be returned with the next Part including an Answer/Prompt sheet.

A pass mark of

50% to 60% will be awarded TL 2 racing grade I or TL 6 Club Racing.
61% to 74% will be awarded TL 2 Class Racing grade II or TL 6 Inshore/Offshore Racing Crew.
Marks of 75% or more will be awarded TL 2 Advanced Racing grade III or TL 6 Inshore/Offshore Racing Skipper.
