If the angle on the bow to an object doubles, how far are you off that object? Can you use your knuckles to navigate? Find out how, and many other simple and practical navigation concepts in this course. This course is a practical extension of the Inshore Skipper / Coastal Skipper Theory Course AYF TL 4.

Your practical exercises are submitted for assessment and returned with answer sheets with the next Part of the course. Students should have completed or achieved the theory level to Competent Crew or Inshore Skipper or have some practical sailing experience.

The course is structured as follows: -

  • Part 1 - Navigational equipment, charts, compass theory, latitude, longitude, variation, deviation and GPS navigation including practical exercises.
  • Part 2 - Distance off, Rule of 60s, interception, distance off by sextant angle and radar including practical exercises and chart plotting.
  • Part 3 - Three bearing fix, running fix, single bearing fix including practical exercises and chart plotting
  • Part 4 - The Rule of 12ths, tide pole calculations, tides and current, set and leeway, making good a course including practical exercises and chart plotting.
  • Part 5 - An examination comprising inshore and offshore exercises.

Each student will be required to have the following equipment, HB pencils and eraser. Dividers Charts AUS 197 and 200 and parallel rules are supplied as part of the course fee.

The Course fee is $300, if you require ALL of the equipment supplied or $230 if you have your own. Prices include GST.
