Coastal / Offshore Skipper Theory

Do you know what a signal being a black ball over a black triangle over a black ball means at the entrance of a harbour or river?

This course will test your seamanship skills and introduce you to many common sensed practices.

This course is suitable for students who:

  • Already hold Inshore endorsement Theory and/or Practical. (If you have not completed the LEARN to SAIL by MAIL Theory and Seamanship course you will be required to complete the Exam in that course and achieve a pass mark of 80%).
  • Have at least 1500 miles coastal sailing extending over not less than 3 seasons including 2 x 60 mile and 1 x 100 mile coastal passages.
  • Have at least 3000 miles coastal and blue water sailing extending over not less than 3 seasons including 2 x 60 mile, 1 x 200 mile coastal and 1 x500 blue water passages for the Offshore Skipper endorsement.
  • Have not yet gained sufficient sea miles but who wish to complete the theory component while accumulating their miles.

The module comes in one manual. There are assessments and an exam and these may be submitted at the same time with your TL 4 log book with your sea miles, where appropriate completed, for endorsement.

The course covers topics relevant to coastal sailing being: Boat dynamics, motors propellers, boat handling, passage planning, crossing bars, elementary radar, dangerous weather systems.

The Course fee is $110 including GST. Recognition of prior practical skills Coastal Skipper $99 Offshore Skipper $121 both incl GST
